What is LTE and VoLTE? Difference between LTE and VoLTE

Data transmission has always played a significant role in every achievement humanity owns so far. Data transmission means sharing of data/information with others. Many factors affect data transmission, and cellular connectivity is one of them. The term 3G or 3rd generation made the ‘G’ technology famous worldwide. These mobile networks have played a significant role in the development of the world. Having a compact device with blazing fast connectivity which makes data transmission a piece of work is a quite fantastic fact in itself.

What is LTE:

We have seen G,2G,3G, and 4G so far. However, the case with 4G is a little different. The 4G we use today in our smartphones isn’t true 4G by which we mean that no ISP has been able to provide that particular speed bar which defines “4G” in actual terms. That’s why an abbreviation “LTE” or Long Term Evolution is used to address this new connectivity which is still a lot better and efficient than 3G.

The term “LTE” is used to address the fact that the 4G LTE technology has advanced a lot over the years and is still under development. The actual mark/speed required to declare it as true 4G hasn’t been reached yet by the ISPs.The LTE technology is improving with high consistency, and it’s possible we can see the right might of true 4G in the near future.

What is VoLTE:

VoLTE stands for “Voice over Long Term Evolution” or “Voice over LTE.”It promises the users high-quality voice calls. So one might ask how exactly are the calls’ qualities going to improve? There’s a quite simple answer to this question. The consumer’s requests are going to be treated as data transmission but in vocal form.

This overall combination of technology was termed as “4G VoLTE”.Consumers can call without a third party app which was required to make calls in the 4G LTE phones. An essential benefit of VoLTE is that your network won’t drop from 4G to lower networks like 3G or 2G when you’re making a call which is quite beneficial in many ways.

VoLTE also boosts your phone’s overall coverage area, and it’s the ability to maintain the quality of calls even when the rate of data transmission in the form of calls is comparably lower. Being on a 4G VoLTE network means that both your calls and your data will use the 4G network which enhances the overall experience. However not all the handsets out there support the availability of the 4G VoLTE.

There are still plenty of handsets with just 4G LTE feature, and thus their users have to rely on third-party apps for enjoying the feature of HD calls.

VoLTE is a fantastic feature; however numerous people around us don’t know about VoLTE or even the 4G LTE technology. One might ask the difference between the two of them. The differences between 4G LTE and 4G VoLTE are mentioned below.

Differences between LTE and VoLTE:

The most fundamental difference between LTE and VoLTE is of what their full forms are.LTE stands for ‘Long Term Evolution’ whereas VoLTE stands for ‘Voice over Long Term Evolution.’The additional ‘Vo’ in the latter itself points out the differences between the two of them. The original purpose behind LTE was to make it a full IP(internet provider) cellular system built for the sole purpose of data connection and transmission.

VoLTE is a high definition voice calling service over 4G LTE rather than 3G/2G networks. The 2G network was developed for voice calls only.

As mentioned before, LTE is a system meant for carrying data. Making a call from LTE network said that the operators would be able to carry the voice either by reverting to a lower network, i.e., 3G or 2G. The consumer gets only data bandwidth on a 4G LTE network whereas you get data bandwidth as well as calling services on a VoLTE network. Video call is a feature that has brought the world closer. You need an external software for video calling like Skype on a 4G LTE network, but you can video call someone directly from your number if you’re on a VoLTE network. A consistent data connection is needed while making calls on a 4G LTE network which means you can’t turn off your internet connection while making a call or else the call won’t connect.

It results in significant battery drainage in phones. However, you can call anyone irrespective of your data status if you’re on a VoLTE network. This also avoids the drainage of battery, unlike the 4G LTE network.

Conclusion:

We all know how vital data transmission is and how useful it can be. It serves multiple purposes with excellent efficiency. The connectivity technology has significantly developed over the decades, and now we’re enjoying the 4G LTE and VoLTE services which are game-changers. They both work on the 4G network but are different in many ways and have their own set of pros and cons. The features these two pack have made those things possible which were unthinkable at a time.

Now we can easily connect from a corner of the world to any other angle and with anyone in a mere few seconds. However, the VoLTE has an apparent upper hand over LTE, and there are many logical reasons behind that which already have been discussed. Today almost every phone supports the 4G VoLTE.Both LTE and VoLTE are precious factors on which the future of cellular connectivity depends. The mobile connectivity will keep getting better day by day and one day we also might be able to do something unthinkable now.
